Crate Training: A Necessity

Crate training, while more accepted these days, still carries an unwarranted stigma in many households. Regardless of whether or not you plan on having your dog roam the house as an adult, crate training is needed both to aid in potty training and to set your dog up for success in their adult life.

Crating a dog while you're away from home is the safest choice, as they are notorious for doing less than ideal activities - like ingesting pieces of toys or chewing up your favorite pillow! Even if you choose to let your dog free-roam, though, there will probably come a time when they have to be crated. Whether it be during a vet visit or while boarded during your vacations, your pup will benefit from being accustomed to kenneling.

Crate training is also indispensable for potty training. When using it in this manner, take puppy out to the bathroom whenever they come out of the crate and before putting them in it. This will help strengthen the connection of potting outside being desirable as you will be able to reward their good pott habits more often.

Make it a good experience by working it into your routine, as the place they go to for meal or treat time! A cozy crate mat for those dogs old enough to not chew their bedding is another great tactic. Rather than looking at it as a cage, think of the kennel as your dog's safe space. They will thank you for it!
